  • What are stearates?

  • Zinc Stearate is a fine white powder that is lubricating, moisture resistant and somewhat heat stable. It is often used as an additive in industrial and everyday products and is widely used for its chemical stability and good dispersibility.

  • Function and effect

Lubricant: It reduces friction between materials and is often used in processing.

Stabilizer: It is used as a heat stabilizer in the plastics and rubber industries, especially in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) processing.

Water repellent: Due to its hydrophobicity, it can be used to prevent water penetration.

Separating agent: Prevents substances from sticking together and is often used in mold release or powder metallurgy.

Thickeners or fillers: serve to adjust the texture or increase the volume in cosmetics and paints.

  • Areas of application

Plastics industry: used as heat stabilizer and lubricant in PVC products (e.g. pipes, plates) to prevent high temperature degradation during processing.

Rubber industry: used as softener and mold releasing agent to improve the molding efficiency of rubber products.

Cosmetics: Commonly used in products such as powders and talcum powders to provide a smooth touch and water resistance.

Coatings and paints: as matting or dispersing agents to improve the gloss and smoothness of coatings.

Pharmaceuticals: Used as a lubricant in the manufacture of tablets to aid in the compression molding of pharmaceutical powders.

Others: Used in textile waterproof treatment, paper coating, powder metallurgy and other fields.

  • Usage and Precautions

Usage: Usually added directly to raw materials in powder form, mixed proportionally according to specific applications. The amount added varies depending on the industry and application:

Plastics/Rubber: generally 0.5%-3% of the formula, evenly dispersed through the mixer.

Cosmetics: added in small amounts (usually less than 5%) as required by the formulation, mixed with the powder.

Coatings: add to mixing equipment to ensure full integration with the base material.

  • Caution:

Excessive use should be avoided, otherwise product performance may be affected (e.g. loss of plastic transparency).

When processing at high temperatures (e.g. PVC extrusion), ensure that it is used in synergy with other stabilizers to achieve the best results.

Storage should be kept dry to avoid moisture caking.
