  • Application Status of Plasticizers
    1.Main Functions

Flexibility enhancement: Plasticizers are inserted between PVC molecular chains, weakening the intermolecular force, reducing the glass transition temperature (Tg), and transforming hard PVC into soft material.

Processing performance optimization: reduce melt viscosity, improve production efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

Physical property regulation: control the hardness, low temperature resistance and aging resistance of the material by adjusting the plasticizer type and dosage.
  • The Positive Impact of Plasticizers on PVC Production

    1.Expanding Application Areas

Flexible PVC is widely used in wires and cables, medical devices (e.g., infusion tubes), artificial leather, toys, etc. It meets the needs for flexibility and durability in different scenarios.

Material properties (e.g. oil resistance, flame retardancy) can be customized by adjusting the plasticizer ratio.

    2.Production efficiency and cost advantages

Plasticizers simplify PVC processing, lower processing temperatures and reduce equipment losses.

The cost-effectiveness of phthalate plasticizers drives the popularity of PVC products at the lower end of the market.

  • Potential Problems with Plasticizer Use
    1.Environmental and Health Risks

Migration and release: Small molecule plasticizers are easily precipitated from PVC products, contaminating soil and water bodies and enriching through the food chain.

Endocrine disruptive: Some phthalates have been shown to have estrogen-like effects, which may affect reproductive development (e.g. DEHP is classified as a restricted substance by the European Union under the REACH regulation).

Recycling challenges: Soft PVC containing plasticizers is difficult to mechanically recycle, and incineration may produce toxic substances such as dioxins.

    2.Material Performance Limitations

Excessive use of plasticizers may result in reduced strength and weathering resistance.

Volatilization or migration of plasticizers after long-term use may lead to brittleness and shortened product life.
